As you might have seen from my Conservation Workshop posted earlier today, it's National Nest Box Week starting today and lasting until 21st February. This is a time when we might think about putting up a nest box to encourage pairing birds into our gardens (https://www.bto.org/how-you-can-help/nnbw).
House sparrows, blue tits, chaffinches and greenfinches - all of which come into our gardens - need shelter and warmth to nest, and considering that their natural habitats in holes and buildings are becoming sparser as a result of people making home improvements and clearing wooded areas, anything that could help the one in four UK birds of Conservation Concern, can only be positive (https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/advice/gardening-for-wildlife/year-round-gardening/february/). It would also help promote wildlife diversity whilst allowing for more beautiful birdsong in our lives. So, this Valentine’s Day we're showing Mother Nature the love and have put up a new nest box in our garden.
These dancing love birds were sketched by me and coloured in by my best girl. I added a bit of oil pastel for the circulating air. Oh, and Happy Valentine's Day!
