World Chimpanzee Day
To celebrate the second World Chimpanzee Day today on 14th July, a date which commemorates the first day Jane Goodall stepped foot in Gombe in 1960, I sketched this and my daughter coloured it in and named her Mirabelle, whilst learning about chimp conservation. A beautiful name for one of our beautiful baby cousins.
Did you know that chimpanzees are great apes along with humans, gorillas and orangutans which all have large brains and no tails (https://www.livescience.com/51017-ape-facts.html)? Monkey species, however, do have tails and are much smaller than great apes. Humans are so closely related to chimpanzees that we share 98.5% DNA with them so it’s good to think about our chimp relatives and how they’re faring in the world these days, especially at this time of year.
